Beginning in 2014, 3GT Resident Playwright Suze Allen and psychologist Dr. Carol Langlois have collaborated to present GIRL TALK, a play based on Dr. Carol’s groundbreaking book , Girl Talk: Boys, Bullies and Body Image. The book is a collection of true stories about real teens struggling with tough issues surrounding self-esteem, based on interviews with teenage girls in the San Francisco area. Seventy-five percent of teenage girls with self-esteem issues (have reported) engaging in negative activities such as: smoking, drinking, bullying, cutting, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, and even suicide attempts.
Dramatic story telling is a very compelling form of acceptance and self healing. 3GT is committed to using the tools we have as theater-makers to help young women and girls combat the pressures around body image and self esteem in our society. Translated into monologues, these powerful teen stories about real-life struggles with friends, peer pressure, anxiety and how they survived invariably spark discussions and deep responses among our audience members — teenagers, parents and educators alike. The monologues are all performed by young actors who bring their own experiences and deep empathy to the performance and the talk-back.
